Singer (hit songs include I'm Like A Bird, Try, Promiscuous, Maneater).

Currently lives in Toronto. Born in Victoria, B.C. to immigrant parents from the Azores. She moved to Toronto, after graduating from highschool in Victoria.

According to Wikipedia: "Growing up in Canada and experiencing Toronto's cultural diversity, she has said that she did not have to wait for the Internet revolution to learn about world music; she began listening to it at the age of fifteen and continues to discover new genres".

Prior to making it big she sang in the groups Nelstar and Honey Jam, the latter performing at Lee's Palace.

Nelly's first child was born at her home in Toronto.

Named a "Torontonians who impressed the hell out of us in 2006" by Toronto Life Magazine (Dec. 2006). The article stated her desire to remain in the city:
"After the success of her debut in 2000, no one would have been surprised if she’d relocated south of the border. And with the success of Loose, it only seemed a matter of time. But Furtado has firmly stated that she’s not going anywhere. She’s rhapsodized about Toronto’s multiculturalism and liberal politics, praising it as the perfect place to raise her young daughter, Nevis. "
